How to Change Character in GTA 5 on PC, PS5 and Xbox

To change character in GTA 5, hold the character-switch button, highlight Michael, Franklin or Trevor on the wheel, then release the button. On PlayStation and Xbox controllers, hold Down on the D-pad and use the right stick. On PC, hold Left Alt and select the character with the mouse.

The switch may be temporarily unavailable during certain missions, wanted situations and scripted sequences. GTA Online also handles multiple custom characters differently from Story Mode.

GTA 5 character-switch controls

• PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4: hold Down on the D-pad, move the right stick to a character, then release Down.
• Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: hold Down on the D-pad, use the right stick to highlight a character, then release Down.
• PC keyboard and mouse: hold Left Alt, move the mouse to the required character, then release Alt.
• PC shortcuts: the default F5–F8 character shortcut keys can open the wheel with the relevant slot selected. Rockstar notes that these controls can be rebound.

How to switch characters on PlayStation

1. Make sure you are in GTA V Story Mode and not inside a restricted sequence.
2. Press and hold Down on the directional pad.
3. Keep holding Down while moving the right stick toward Michael, Franklin or Trevor.
4. Release the D-pad button when the required portrait is highlighted.
5. Wait for the transition animation to finish.

A quick tap on the D-pad may display information instead of completing a switch. Hold the button until the full wheel appears.

How to switch characters on Xbox

1. While playing Story Mode, hold Down on the D-pad.
2. Point the right stick toward the character you want.
3. Release Down to confirm the selection.

The procedure is the same on Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers. If a custom controller layout is active, check the control settings for the command assigned to character switching.

How to change character on PC

1. Hold the Left Alt key to open the character wheel.
2. Move the mouse toward the portrait of Michael, Franklin or Trevor.
3. Release Alt to switch.

Rockstar also provides default character shortcut keys in the F5–F8 range. During supported missions, tapping the appropriate shortcut can switch immediately. If your keyboard uses the function row for brightness or media controls, you may need to hold the Fn key or use Left Alt instead.

Why can’t I change characters?

Character switching is deliberately limited at some points in the story. Common reasons include:

• You have not progressed far enough to unlock another protagonist.
• The current mission allows only one character or controls switching automatically.
• You are in a scripted scene, activity, interior or transition.
• Your current wanted level or immediate danger temporarily blocks the switch.
• The other character is unavailable because of the story.
• The switch command has been rebound on PC.

If the wheel should be available but does not open, complete or leave the current activity, move to a safe outdoor location and try again. Saving and reloading Story Mode can clear a temporary interface problem. PC players should also check Settings, Key Bindings and the character-switch assignment.

How switching works during missions

Some missions use character switching as part of their design. When a switch is permitted, the game may highlight another protagonist or prompt you to change perspective. In other missions, the wheel is restricted to protect the scripted sequence.

Rockstar's PC guidance says that tapping the relevant shortcut key can switch immediately during missions that support the feature. Do not assume a locked wheel is a controller fault if the mission has not yet enabled another viewpoint.

How to change your GTA Online character

Switching between Story Mode protagonists is different from selecting one of your GTA Online characters. Rockstar allows up to two Online characters on an account.

• PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GTA V Enhanced on PC: open the Pause Menu, select Online, then Manage Characters.
• PS4, Xbox One and GTA V Legacy on PC: open the Pause Menu, select Online, then Swap Characters.

Select the character you want to use and confirm. Changing Online characters can load a new session and is not the instant cinematic switch used in Story Mode.

Changing appearance is not the same as switching

If you want to edit the face, heritage or appearance of your current GTA Online avatar, use the appearance option rather than Manage Characters or Swap Characters. Rockstar states that gender cannot be changed after initial creation. Do not delete a character when you only intend to select or restyle it; deletion is permanent after confirmation.

Can you play as only one protagonist?

You can spend much of free roam with a preferred protagonist, but the story requires Michael, Franklin and Trevor at different points. Mission markers are color-coded: Rockstar identifies green with Franklin, blue with Michael and orange with Trevor. Some missions appear only for a particular character.
